Biodiversity description andthreats The Tonle Sap Great Lake is a unique ecosystem of enormous ecological value.. It is a key breeding ground for fish, and is home to globally important colonies of endangered water birds, as well as reptiles, mammals and water snakes. It is the largest seasonally flooded freshwater swamp forest habitat in Southeast Asia. The lake's ecosystem is highly productive, with this productivity in large part dependent on a 'flood pulse' from the Mekong, which replenishes nutrients in the lake and enriches the floodplain. The Northern Plains of Cambodia are the largest remaining intact block of a unique landscape that once covered much of Indochina. Dominated by open deciduous forest, grasslands, and seasonal wetlands, the area has been described as the Asian equivalent of the African savannas. It maintains a community of large mammals and wetland birds found nowhere else in the world. There are also many globally important populations of threatened mammal species in the Northern Plains

The largest species is the Asian Elephant, which is found mostly in evergreen and riverine forest, and there are also two species of wild cattle (Gaur and Banteng). These three species have an important ecological role in keeping open trapping or water holes and maintaining patches of open ground around these key sites as these are important for many threatened bird species. Systematic CONSERVATION planning Explaining Marxan Systematic conservation planning approach was used because the ecological planning did not work Planning units were created(hexagon planning units) A planning unit Tenure map was created called PU_Tenure map A PU_Tenure paassess map is created Use the National treasure website to select endemic and endangered species Download spatial data of these species as shape files of more than 40 occurences Run Marxan at 50% target range using all this information that has been retrieved Methods Use this slide and simple drawings or flow diagrams to explain the core concepts of MARXAN. You should not use the IDRISI dialogue boxes. Ensure you use proper annotation and include a descriptive caption.
