Exit Slip = Rate and Reflect Quarter 3 Scale for Grade 8 Standard: RL 5 Exit Slip = Rate and Reflect 4 Students will be able to: Predict what inferences can be made based on the analysis of two differing text structures.   3 Compare and Contrast the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style. (LAFS.8.RL.2.5) 2 ___Identify different text structures ___Explain how paragraphs and/or stanzas transition ___Identify plot ___Identify how the text is organized ___Determine the difference between poetic structures {There may be more text structures to add to learning targets. Please feel free to add more.} Students will be able to recognize or recall specific vocabulary, including: ___ Development ___ Plot ___ Poetic Structure (soliloquy, sonnet, haiku, etc.) ___ Structure ___ Organization ___ Scene ___ Stanza 1 With help, students are able to have partial success with 2.0 and/or 3.0 content. Even with help, the student has no success with the unit content.

Culminating Writing Task Write an essay in which you explain what “double consciousness” Staples and Cofer experience and how it affects them. Your essay must be based on the ideas and information found in the texts. Manage your time carefully so that you can Read the passages Plan your response Write your response; and Revise and edit your response Your written response should be in the form of a multi-paragraph essay.

Determine Your Purpose for Reading In groups of 4, break down the writing prompt by answering the following questions… What is the prompt asking? Possible Sentence Starter: The prompt is asking me to… What is DuBois trying to say about double consciousness in this quote? When closely reading the DuBois quote, analyze important words and phrases to determine the meaning of double consciousness.

Possible Answers… The prompt is asking me to identify what Staples and Cofer experience that shows “double consciousness” and how these experiences affect their behavior. Double consciousness means feeling as though you have more than one identity, seeing yourself one way and seeing how others see you differently.

Break Down the Prompt What might a fill in the blank thesis statement sound like? Possible Answer: The double consciousness Cofer and Staples experience is…………….which affects them……………. How could I organize the essay? Possible Answer: A body paragraph explaining Staples and Cofer’s experience with double consciousness and another body paragraph about how it affected them.

Break Down the Prompt How will I take notes? Possible Answer: Two column notes since there are two texts. One side for Staples and the other for Cofer. How could I get it wrong? Possible Answer: Writing about Staples and Cofer’s experience with double consciousness but not explaining how it affected them.

Read and Take Notes on a Chart Read the first text entirely while gathering relevant information then repeat the process with the second text. As you read purposefully, the chart will support your reading focus. You may decide to use your own words instead of copying all quotes from the texts. Both methods are acceptable. Please see the chart examples and record in your journal.
