The Menstrual and Ovarian Cycles
The menstrual cycle  Menstruation: the condition in female when the lining of the uterus breaks down and blood with cells pass out of the vagina during.
The Human Menstrual Cycle What is the importance and stages in the human menstrual cycle?
Stage 1 – Menstruation Starts on Day 1 – lasts 3-7 days Hormones – travel in blood to target tissue – ALL 4 hormones at lowest levels Ovary – – Follicle.
 Produced by endocrine glands  Male endocrine glands = Testes  Female endocrine glands = Ovaries.
Role of Hormones in Menstrual Cycle Anton, Barbara, Gabi.
Do Now Name three organs of the female reproductive system
Hormones of the female reproductive cycle: Anterior pituitary gland: Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH): Stimulates growth of ovarian follicles, and estrogen.
Pituitary Gland FSH Primordial follicles Growing follicles LH.
Ovulation and Menstruation. Function of Menstrual Cycle Uterine walls thickens with rich blood supply in preparation for a fertilized egg If fertilization.
 Follicle Stimulating Hormones (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH)- released in the pituitary gland.  Estrogen- Development of the female secondary sexual.
Hormone Cycles. Pg. 394 Male Hypothalamus releases GnRH GnRH causes the pituitary to release: Male FSH Male FSH which : – Acts on sperm producing.
The Male Reproductive System
Female Sex Hormones By the end of the lesson you should be able to: 1. Say 2 effects of female sex hormones, and say where the hormones are made. 2. Describe.
 The menstrual cycle is approximately a 28-day cycle which is completed in preparation for a human female to reproduce.
Menstruation IF fertilization does NOT take place Menstrual cycle – a series of changes controlled by hormones that help prepare the female uterus for.
WALT ; Describe how the menstrual cycle works All can identify the 4 hormones involved. Most can describe how they regulate the menstrual cycle Some can.
Menstrual Cycle. The Cycle Strongly linked to the endocrine system (hormone based) Typically takes 28 days to cycle through 4 phases ◦ Follicular ◦ Ovulation.
The Menstrual Cycle (The uterine cycle) Three main stages Menstrual Stage Proliferation Stage Secretion Stage.
Menstrual Cycle Regulation
Human Reproductive System. The Human Reproductive System Male sperm cells are produced in the testes Female eggs are produced in the ovaries At about.
The Menstrual Cycle.  Releasing of one egg (ovulation) every month from the ovaries  4 steps: Preparing the egg Releasing egg Preparing the endometrium.

Presentation transcript:

Hormone Description FSH LH estrogen progesterone Made by the pituitary gland Promotes the development of follicles in the ovary LH Made in the pituitary gland Promotes ovulation & the formation of the corpus luteum estrogen Made by developing follicle and corpus luteum in the ovary Promotes thickening of the uterus lining progesterone Made by the corpus luteum Maintains the thickened uterus lining

FSH from pituitary stimulates development of a follicle. Follicle in the ovary develops & secretes estrogen. Estrogen promotes thickening of the uterus lining Uterus lining thickens LH ‘spike’ causes ovulation Corpus luteum forms from empty follicle Corpus luteum makes Progesterone and estrogen Uterus lining continues to thicken and maintains thickness Corpus luteum degenerates & stops making hormones Low levels of estrogen and progesterone cause menstruation

Explained simply: Negative feedback Is a control process where the response to a stimulus reduces that stimulus. LH is produced by pituitary (stimulus) promotes the formation of the corpus luteum corpus luteum then produces progesterone (response) progesterone inhibits LH secretion

Hormone Description FSH LH estrogen progesterone Made by the pituitary gland Promotes the development of follicles in the ovary Promotes estrogen secretion by the follicle cells LH Made in the pituitary gland Promotes ovulation & the formation of the corpus luteum Promotes estrogen secretion by the developing follicle estrogen Made by developing follicle and corpus luteum in the ovary Promotes thickening of the uterus lining Inhibits secretion of FSH Stimulates pituitary to secrete LH progesterone Made by the corpus luteum Maintains the thickened uterus lining Inhibits secretion of LH & FSH

Is a control process where the response to a stimulus increases that Explained simply: Positive feedback Is a control process where the response to a stimulus increases that stimulus. LH is produced by the pituitary gland. LH causes follicle cells to make estrogen. Estrogen promotes production of LH. LH produced increases. This LH production continues to increase until ovulation – then follicle cells become the corpus luteum and make progesterone which inhibits LH production.
