A Survey of Factors Influencing Holistic Management of Schizophrenia Pronab Ganguly Western Sydney University, Sydney, Australia

Structure of the Presentation Impact of Schizophrenia Holistic management of Schizophrenia Proposal of a survey towards holistic management of Schizophrenia Impact of the survey

Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is considered amongst the topmost 10 common disorders in the world About 1% of the general population suffers from Schizophrenia The direct cost of Schizophrenia amounts to 1.4–2.8% of national health care budget and is almost up to 20% of the direct expenses of all types of mental health costs in most of the developed nations

Holistic Management of Schizophrenia Though medications play a major role, other factors that influence holistic management of schizophrenia include the following: complimentary medicine intervention, therapeutic intervention, relationship, entertainment, recreation, accommodation, education, job placement, independent community living skill, public guardianship, stigmatisation, self support group, suicide prevention, substance abuse, exercise and public trusteeship amongst others.

Survey Methodology What? How? Why? We now explain each of them.

Web based International Surveys There will be two surveys – pharmacological and non-pharmacological. In the pharmacological survey, most common antipsychotic will be evaluated for their efficacy as well as side effects in the treatment of schizophrenia in a scale of 0-10. Some complimentary medication also will be evaluated. This survey will be done by psychiatrists in English speaking countries. This survey will be arranged through professional bodies of the psychiatrists and personal contacts.

Web based International Surveys In the second non-pharmacological survey, different therapeutic interventions as well as other socio-economic controlling factors will be evaluated for their importance in a scale of 0-10. This survey will be done by clinical psychologists, care givers and case managers through professional bodies and personal contacts.

Analysis of the Results From the survey responses, we will calculate mean, median , mode, standard deviation and net promoter score. Net Promoter Score - The NPS is determined by subtracting the percentage of detractors from promoters. Respondents are grouped as follows:  Promoters (score 9-10) are respondents who feel very strongly about the issue. Passives (score 7-8) are respondents who satisfied but do not feel very strongly about the issue. Detractors (score 0-6) are respondents who feel poorly about the issue.  Subtracting the percentage of Detractors from the percentage of Promoters yields the Net Promoter Score, which can range from a low of -100 (if every respondent is a Detractor) to a high of 100 (if every respondent is a Promoter).

WHO Guidelines for Quality of Life World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) is aimed to develop an international quality of life assessment mechanism The WHOQOL guideline consists of the following broad domains: physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environment. The socio-economic factors we have chosen will improve the quality of life as per WHO guideline

Ranking of the Factors Each drug, therapeutic intervention and socio-economic factors will be ranked as per their statistical significance

Impact of the study As this study will rank the relative importance of pharmacological intervention, complimentary intervention, therapeutic intervention and socio-economic factors, it will guide the management of Schizophrenia in a holistic manner. This holistic management of Schizophrenia will improve the quality of life for schizophrenia sufferers as per WHO guidelines.
