Life During Reconstruction

Most of the battles of the Civil War had been fought in the South.

After the war, once-wealthy plantation owners were financially ruined. Confederate money is now worthless. Enslaved workers were now free.

Following the war, the cotton crop failed several years in a row… drought boll weevil

Slowly the South’s economy became more industrial Steel factories Saw mills

A solution to the no workers, no money problem

Tenants paid a portion of their crop as rent.
