Endorsements Defined The subjects a teacher can teach and the grade range in which they are authorized to teach them

Everyone who completes a program will be endorsed in something Self-contained General Education All subjects taught to the same kids Example Pre K-2 Early Childhood Education, 1-6 Elementary Education Departmentalized Specialized or narrowly focused instruction Examples: 9-12 grade Biology or Chemistry, Middle grade 5-8 General Science or Math

Adding Additional endorsements Can expand on your qualifications With some exceptions (which I’ll expand upon later), you are confined to the grade range of your initial licensure (unless you go through another program) Example, Early childhood (B-2nd grade) teachers can’t add H.S. endorsements Some may be finished as an undergrad while others may require post graduate work

Middle grade (5-8) Who is able to receive these? Middle grade program OR in a pre K -12 or K- 12 program) 21 hours of content coursework 3 semester hours of appropriate methodology Passing the content test Passing the middle grade test OR 1 year of teaching grades 5-8 OR a passing score on the Elementary/Middle grade test (People wanting the middle grade math are recommended to follow the distribution of courses of the middle grade math program)

High School (9-12) Many High School endorsements 24 hours of coursework 12 of those hours must be upper-level (300 or above)-(Upper-level for math is MATH 118 or above) Pass the ILTS content test

Social Science (with a required designation) 32 overall hours of social science 12 in one designation Designations are History, Geography, Economics, Political Science, Sociology & Anthropology, and Psychology One course from at least two other designations (see above) Pass the content test

Adding additional 9-12 grade Social Science designations (once you’ve got one met) Take 12 semester hours in the designation Pass the content test in that designation This allows you to teach Advance Placement and honors for the subject

Science 32 overall hours of Science 12 of those hours in a designation Designations are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth & Space Science, Environmental Science At least one course from two other designations (see above) At least one course in physical sciences and one course from life sciences (can’t all be from just one) Pass the content test in the designation in which you have 12 hours

Adding additional 9-12 grade Science designations (when you have one met) 12 semester hours in the designation Pass the content test in that designation This allows you to teach Advance Placement and Honors for that designation

Pre K-12 endorsements Can be added by Cote IF you are in a Pre K-12 program (such as LBSI) or a K-12 program If you are NOT in one of these programs, these endorsements may be added by ISBE AFTER you are licensed. ISBE will assess a fee (currently $30.00) for every endorsement requested.

Foreign Language 24 hours in the same foreign language Pass the appropriate Foreign Language content test Additional foreign languages (once you’ve met one) can be met by passing the appropriate foreign language test in that foreign language.

Library Information Specialist 24 hours of coursework 12 of those hours must be upper-level pass the content test

Reading Teacher (see distribution below) (Available to GRAD STUDENTS only-I only mention this one as some of you might want to pursue it later)

Bilingual Education (see distribution below) Clinical experience should be in actual teaching of bilingual education and not merely observation If you acquire documentation and send it to me, I can scan it and at it to “images” in your ELIS account

English as a Second Language (see distribution below) Clinical experience should be in actual teaching of ESL and not merely observation If you acquire documentation and send it to me, I can scan it and at it to “images” in your ELIS account

Pursuing endorsements Determine what endorsements you want Determine what the requirements are Plan ahead Don’t have to declare like you would a minor Gen Education courses and Area of concentration courses may count toward endorsements For endorsements which require tests, take them when you feel most prepared

SOME upper-level course may be restricted to majors so you may have some extra legwork to do to get into them

The COTE can add some endorsements when you apply for your initial license. Bilingual Persons seeking this endorsement must have a total of 18 semester hours of coursework required below and meet the other requirements:  Bilingual clinical experience totaling 100 clock hours or three months teaching experience in bilingual programs. Students in licensure programs may contact their clinical experience office to see if a bilingual placement is an option during student teaching (please note, it won't be an option for everyone).  The teacher you work with at the school where the hours are conducted needs to write a detailed letter documenting the nature of activities, age group of individuals in program, number of days/hours per day worked, etc.  This documentation is subject to ISBE approval.  In lieu of student teaching in a bilingual setting or an acceptable outside experience, CI 595 may be taken to gain the 100 clock hours.   • Successful completion of a Language Proficiency Test for an Educator License with Stipulations Endorsed as Transitional Bilingual in the non-English language to be taught.  See https://www.il.nesinc.com/PageView.aspx?f=GEN_Tests.html. •  Credits totaling 18 semester hours distributed among the following course areas: 1. Foundations of Bilingual Education (CI 433) 2. Assessment of Bilingual Students (CI 517) 3. Methods and Materials for Teaching Limited-English-Proficient      Students in Bilingual Programs (CI 477) 4. Cross-Cultural Studies for Teaching Limited-English-Proficient     Students (EIL 456 or CI 446)  Note: CI 415 is a restricted      course, but will count for this area for those who are required     to take the course. 5. Methods and Materials for Teaching English as a Second     Language (EIL 411 or CI 477) Many of the courses listed above can also be taken online.  See oce.illinois.edu for availability.  Note:  This program was designed as a graduate-level program.  Undergraduates may not take the CI online coursework.

English as a Second Language Persons seeking this endorsement must have a total of 18 semester hours of coursework required below and meet the other requirements: •          ESL clinical experience equal to 100 clock hours or three months teaching experience with ESL students. Students in licensure programs may contact their clinical experience office to see if an ESL (or bilingual) placement is an option during student teaching (please note, it won't be an option for everyone). The teacher you work with at the school where the hours are conducted needs to write a detailed letter documenting the nature of activities, age group of individuals in program, number of days/hours per day worked, etc.  This documentation is subject to ISBE approval. For clinical experience through the UI, but not through student teaching, students may enroll in EIL 214, EIL 215, or CI 595. ·  A student log must be kept of time spent in EIL 214 or 215. ·  Instructor must write a letter describing nature of activities, age group, etc. ·  Log and letter must be sent to Council on Teacher Education   •          Credits totaling 18 semester hours distributed among the following course areas. 1.  Linguistics (LING 100, EIL 422, EIL 486, EIL 487, EIL 488, LING/ANTH 400, CI 507 LCT, or SPAN 252 [SPAN 302 prior to FA09]) 2. Theoretical Foundations of Teaching ESL (EIL/LING 489 or CI 433) 3.  Assessment of the Bilingual Student (EIL 460 or CI/LIS 517) ·     If EIL 460 is taken Student must inform instructor that she/he wants to work in public schools Instructor will adapt curriculum for public school work ·     Student must ask instructor to write the Council stating that course satisfies public school component 4.    Methods and Materials for Teaching ESL (EIL 411 or CI 477) 5.    Cross-Cultural Studies for Teaching Limited-English-Proficient Students (EIL 456 or CI 446)  Note: CI 415 is a restricted course, but will count for this area for those who are required to take the course. Reading Teacher Successful completion of the Reading Teacher test (#177) or the Reading Specialist test (#176) AND completion of 24 hours of credit in Reading with coursework in all the following areas Foundations in reading: CI 475, CI 502, or CI 503. CI 504 will also count but it is focused on middle grades and secondary ed Content-area reading:  CI 471, CI 503, or CI 582 (only 2 hrs count toward this endorsement if using CI 582) CI 472, CI 473 will also count, but these courses are focused on middle grades and secondary ed Assessment & diagnosis of reading problems: CI 575 Developmental & remedial reading instruction & support: CI 576 Developmental & remedial materials & resources: CI 575 or CI 576 Literature appropriate to students across all grade ranges: CI 467, CI 567, CI 568, CI 585, or CI 587 (CI 499 MCL prior to spring 2012) Reading practicum: CI 577 Additional courses that may count as "reading teacher endorsement electives" are CI 465 and CI 468.  Note: The Reading Teacher program is a graduate-level program only.
