Understanding how Credits work in high school Freshmen must earn 60 credits Students earn 5 credits for each class they take in a semester. Students take 6 classes in a semester. 6 classes x 5 credits = 30 Repeat semester 2 = 60 High School Diploma – 230 credits 4 years x 60 credits = 240 Students are given opportunity to earn extra credits in case they must repeat a class.
Registration Dates Registration: February 27-28th All current 8th grade students will register through their AB class, in the LMC.
Required 9th Grade Classes All Freshmen must take: English Math Physical Education (PE) Health *To be NCAA compliant, recommend four academic classes per year. Students must take 6 classes Typically, freshmen choose either Science OR a World Language which are considered academic electives. All Band students must take both Band PE and PE Core.
Registration Form Please complete all the requested course information. Parents – be sure to sign before your student registers for classes tomorrow. No parent signature = no registration! Registration form is due at registration!
English Courses offered: Honors English 9 Or…. Enrolled students: A in Language Arts Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher AB teacher approval Or…. Pass English 9 Honors Placement Test (Wednesday, Mar 13 in the Kastner library after school. Enrolled students: Required to complete summer work.
Social Science All CUSD students must take Health. There is an option to take Health during the summer for students with an impacted schedule. AP Human Geography – students must have a 3.5 GPA and an “A” in English.
PE Sports PE – Coaches will contact counselors to enroll students into the correct PE Classes. Students who wish to take 2 electives, creating an impacted schedule may take zero period PE.
Math Placement Guidelines 8th Grade Math at Kastner 1st and 2nd Semester Grade 9th Grade Placement Math 8 A, B, C or D Math 1 Advanced Math 8 A or B AND Must take Placement Test Math 2 or Honors Math 2 C,D, or F
Math 2nd semester grade will be checked before confirming student placement for 2019- 2020. In order to move to the next math level, it is imperative that you work very hard now, earning C’s or better. The math grades you earn in both semesters of eighth grade along with a possible math placement test, will determine the math class you are allowed to enroll in for freshman year.
Science Pathway 9th Grade Math Placement 9th Grade Science Course Integrated Physical Science (P) or Biology if student has earned “C”s during both semesters of 8th grade science. Math 2 and/or English 9 Honors Honors Biology Math 2 Honors Chemistry
Science Integrated Physical Science 1 Biology – “C”s both semesters of Science 8. Students who are enrolled in Math 2 may select Honors Biology. Student must be in Math 2 Honors to enroll in Chemistry.
Electives Choose carefully – students must stay in electives for entire school year. NO class schedule changes will be made unless there is an incorrect placement. All students will need to choose 1 elective and alternative course. IMPORTANT: Class balancing takes place within the first two weeks of the school year. Class schedules MAY BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
World Language 2.5 GPA needed to enroll in World Language. Spanish 1 and 2 Chinese 1 French 1 Honors Spanish 2 – offered for students who are native speakers. 2 years of World Language is required by the CSU/UC system.
NCAA There are course and GPA requirements for the NCAA Division 1 and 2 If your student is interested in collegiate athletics, please speak with your counselor to discuss the NCAA requirements and steps to eligibility You can visit the NCAA website for more information www.eligibilitycenter.org/

Academic Interventions Tutoring is available before school, lunch, and after-school on most days with the exception of Friday. A list of student tutors will become available around the third week of the semester for Math and World Language subjects. The typical rate is $12-15. On Wednesday and Thursday, school begins at 8:05 so students can get extra help from their teachers before the day begins.
Summer School 2019 Location: Alta Sierra Intermediate School Independent Study: (June 11th) Deadline – Students must register for Original Credit – Health by April 12, 2019. Mandatory orientation: TBA (student cannot miss orientation) Attendance: students will be dropped on their 2nd absence. DRESS CODE WILL BE ENFORCED.
Succeeding in High School Parent Connect – student information system which allows parents to monitor academics, attendance, discipline, test scores, and transcripts. If a student is absent, parents must report the absence to the Attendance Office within 24 hours or the child will get Detention. If a student must leave campus during lunch, the parent must sign out their student since we are a closed campus or the child will get detention. A parent may call in a pass if their child must leave before or after lunch. Text to 81010 @cwnest23
Student Conduct Clovis West has a Student Parent Handbook which can be accessed under the CW webpage to view school discipline procedures. “SRC” Student Responsibility Center – is located in the “A” building and houses all disciplinary action. Learning Director, Matt Hernandez oversees all school discipline matters.
Returning to School in August Clovis West office will be open starting the first week of August. Freshman Orientation/Registration Day is scheduled for August 8th, 2019. It is during this event that students will pick up their schedule. During this day, students may visit counselor to adjust any scheduling errors. (ex: student does not have six classes) Schedules may be subject to change the first couple of weeks of school for balancing of classes. NO Teacher or Period Requests will be honored since we are striving to keep class loads balanced.
