Tax Information—International Students DISCLAIMER Please note the staff of the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies are not trained or licensed to answer questions concerning your tax situation or offer tax advice. Students should consult tax professionals for specific tax advice.

Who is this for? NOTE This information is for students on F-1 or J-1 visas who have been in the U.S. for 5 years or less.

Why do you have to file an income tax return as an International Student? Because the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) says so! Everyone in the United States is required to file an income tax return. Since you are a student in the U.S. and living here temporarily, this includes you. Note: Interest from U.S. banks or credit unions is not considered source of income for nonresident aliens

Who has to file an income tax form? EVERYONE (THIS INCLUDES ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS), whether you have worked the previous year or not, MUST file an income tax return.

If in U.S. in 2018 All international students nonresident for tax purposes (All individuals in the U.S. on F-1 or J-1 Student visas for 5 years or less or J-1 Scholar visas for 2 years or less) must file Form 8843. “Statement for Exempt Individuals and Individuals with a Medical Condition” Form 8843 is an IRS supplemental form (information only) that must be filed by all nonresident students in order to exclude the days of presence in United States from the Substantial Presence Test.

How to Fill out form 8843

How to Fill out form 8843 Mailing address for all non-resident alien tax forms: Internal Revenue Service Austin, TX 73301 Note: If you had no U.S. earned income and are filing only Form 8843, the deadline for filing this form is June 15, 2019. If you must file Form 1040NR-EZ or 1040NR, then you must complete Form 8843 and mail with your tax return before the filing deadline, which is April 15, 2019.

QUESTIONS? Were you in the U.S. in 2018? Did you work in the U.S. in 2018? If you worked did you make: Less than $4000? Form 8843 is all you need More than $4000? You must file Form 1040NR-EZ or 1040NR in addition to Form 8843 if you had U.S. earned income in excess of $4,000

QUESTIONS? Where do I find out how much I made?

Answer: W-2 form Which you will get from your employer, whether Salve or not.

What information will I need? Copies of previous year’s income tax return. If you filed an income tax return for the previous year, you will need copies of it for the current year’s filing (for example, this year you will need to bring your information from 2018 to utilize it for filing your 2019 income tax return).

What do I do now? File your income tax form electronically with Sprintax tax-prep. You will need to contact the Director of International Student Success for the code: https://www.sprintax.com/uni- lp.html?utm_ref=providencelp&utm_content=prmc DO NOT use any other online tax preparation software. If you are a non- resident for tax purposes, you are not eligible to file your tax return electronically. Commercially purchased tax return software will file your return incorrectly. Non-residents for tax purposes should only use the Sprintax software.
