Background & motivation Tools for learning at individual or classroom level neglects the notion of community, missed opportunities gives the learner a passive role Mobile technology distributed participation contemporary participation Ubiquitous technology relate to the information, not to the medium

Background & motivation Mainstream work in HCI is user-neutral assuming fully-able grown-ups? research is needed for groups with other needs Children as a user group recent area of interest, but growing

Technology for children Important tool for richer learning experience? Desktop computers have to some extent not met expectations Can mobile & ubiquitous technology help? available less expensive, less space allow more creative forms of interactions that can meet children's need for play, colour and beauty

Technology for children Age group: pre-school (3-6 years) or primary school Cultural integration in the community? learning about different cultures through collaboration with other children / families Do kids need technology?
