Planning & Implementing Team & Student Roles

Primary Student Roles Learning of multiple roles is central to the success of Sport Education Player Required Duty Team Roles Team Roles Specialist Roles

Player Primary Student Roles Contribute to team play. Contribute to competition. Learn techniques & tactics. Play hard & fair. Respect officials & opponents. Support teammates.

Primary Student Roles Player Role Card Player/Performer Role Descriptor Sporting events reflect the opportunity to match your skills, knowledge and strategies with (an) opponent(s), against time, or a standard. They allow us to find our limits, how good we are and good we can become. All the while it is important to remember that in the end, the outcome of the game or match should be determined by these same skills, strategies, and chance. If the outcome is determined by other factors such as cheating and/or unfair advantages, it takes away from the experience for all involved. Your Tasks / Duties Be present at every class; ready to practice and play hard. Support and encourage ALL your teammates, regardless of skill or ability). Give your best effort. Respect your opponents and all others (e.g., officials; scorekeepers etc.). Exhibit good sports behavior. Play fair. Needed Skills / Attributes Willingness to play your best, regardless of your previous experience. Take serious your role of encouraging ALL your peers. Take responsibility for your actions during all parts of the season. Willingness to practice your skills on your own time. Player Role Card

Required Duty Team Roles: Primary Student Roles Required Duty Team Roles: Referee / Official. Scorekeeper. Learn techniques & tactics. Play hard and fair. Respect officials and opponents. Support teammates.

Primary Student Roles Team Roles Coach. Captain. Manager. For ex. Captain. Manager. Fitness Specialist. Publicist. Commentator.

Primary Student Roles Specialist Roles Ball Retriever (Volleyball). For ex. Safety Judge (Archery; Golf) Down Marker (Flag Football.). Course Marshall (X-country). Choreographer (Dance). Place Judge (Track & Field).

Notes on Refereeing Consider the following: Give students chances to learn the role! Explain primary role of the referee. Modified games can help simplify the the process of learning to officiate. Use pre-season for practice of this role!

Choosing Roles For A Season Factors to consider: Clearly define the roles! Build in class-time to teach all the roles. Students must get practice learning the roles. Build in accountability. Provide resources needed to fulfill roles.

A Word On Statistics Remember: Keep it simple. As with all roles, practice is vital. Learning about statistics (“how” & “why”) is part of becoming more literate about the sport. Scorekeeping skills will transfer across sports.

For Successful Performance Creating Conditions For Successful Performance Central teacher tasks: Establish importance of the various roles. Assign accountability for role performance. Prepare supporting materials (e.g., team binders; score sheets; equipment; duty team box/-cart).

Including All Students In Sport Education: With diverse roles, physical limitations need not keep students from active participation. Lower-skilled students are more likely to thrive when contributing through non-player roles.

Sports Boards Especially effective at secondary school level programs Increased student input in decision- making process of organizing & designing season. Direct focus on personal growth.

Sports Boards (cont’d.) Possible functions: Assist in competition planning. Share ideas - offer feedback to teacher. Be role models. Plan culminating event(s). Ensure smooth running of the season.

Conflict Resolution Committee It would handle: Concerns of fair play violations, Complaints from / about referees, and Game protests.

Personal/Social Development Sport Education & Personal/Social Development Personal / social development never occurs in isolation. SE’s diverse roles directly target the related objectives. Roles need to be defined, taught, practiced & are part of team performance.
