Study of Hebrews Lesson 7

Hebrews 2:14-18 14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. 16 For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham.

Hebrews 2:14-18 17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.

Hebrews 2:14 14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, This continues the author’s discussion from vss. 9-13 where he stated that Jesus was made for a little while lower than the angels And He also called mankind his brethren

Hebrews 2:14 14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, Why did Jesus take on the flesh? How did Jesus render death powerless? How does the devil have the power of death? Can he just kill whoever he wants?

Hebrews 2:15 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. No! Satan can’t just kill people, but he controls people through their fear of dying How does fear of death subject mankind to slavery throughout their lives?

Hebrews 2:16 16 For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. Who is the “He” hear? Jesus? Satan? Why does the author point out that He gives help to man, but not to angels?

Hebrews 2:17 17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, … How was Jesus made like us “in all things”? In every single way? Does this mean that Jesus was also judged?

Hebrews 2:17 17 … so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. This is the first time in the book that Jesus is named our high priest (more on that in the next chapter) But first, His being our high priest allowed Him to do what?

Hebrews 2:17 17 … so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. How did priests under the Mosaic Law make propitiation for the sins of the people? How does Jesus do this differently?

Hebrews 2:18 18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted. How was Jesus tempted? Why does His being tempted allow Him to be able to come to the aid of us who are tempted? Wouldn’t God know what we needed anyway?
