Solving Simultaneous Equations by Elimination

Aim: To solve Simultaneous Equations by elimination. Key Words: Simultaneous equation, Elimination, Co-efficient

With this method you need to eliminate one of the unknowns. Look to see if any term has the same co-efficient

Co-efficient – the number before the letter

With this method you need to eliminate one of the unknowns. Look to see if any term has the same co-efficient

If the signs are the same you subtract one equation from the other – this will eliminate the unknown

- Example: 4x + 2y = 17 (1) 3x + 2y = 14 (2) x = 3 4x + 2y = 17 (1) The coefficient’s for y are both 2 and the signs are the same so we subtract 3x + 2y = 14 (2) x = 3 By subtracting one equation from the other we have eliminated the y’s and found the value of x 4x + 2y = 17 (1) 4 x 3 + 2y = 17 (1) 12 + 2y = 17 To find the value of y we put the value of x into equation (1) 12 – 12 + 2y = 17 – 12 2y = 5 2 2 Y = 2.5

Now we know that x = 3 and y = 2 Now we know that x = 3 and y = 2.5, we can check that our answer is correct in equation (2) 3x + 2y =14 3 x 3 + 2 x 2.5 = 14 9 + 5 = 14 14 = 14 correct

If the signs are different you add one equation to the other – this will eliminate the unknown

are different add

+ Example: x + y = 15 (1) 3x – y = 9 (2) x + y + 3x – y = 15 +9 The coefficient’s for y are both 1 and the signs are different so we add 3x – y = 9 (2) x + y + 3x – y = 15 +9 From this we can go onto finding the value of x 4x = 24 4x = 24 4 4 To find the value of y we put the value of x into equation (1) x = 6 x + y = 15 6 + y = 15 6 – 6 + y = 15 - 6 y = 9

Now we know that x = 6 and y = 9, we can check that our answer is correct in equation (2) 3x - y =9 3 x 6 - 9 = 9 18 - 9 = 9 9 = 9 correct

If neither of the terms have the same co-efficient, you must multiply one (or both) of the equations in order to have the same co-efficient.

Example 3a + 4b = 41 (1) 4a – 5b = 3 (2)

No co-efficient is the same until we multiply equation (1) by 5 and equation (2) by 4 3a + 4b = 41 x 5 15a + 20b = 205 4a – 5b = 3 x 4 16a – 20b = 12 Which now gives us the new equations

Now we have 2 co-efficients the same with signs that are different so we add the equations 15a + 20b = 205 16a – 20b = 12 15a + 20b + 16a – 20b = 205 + 12 31a = 217 a = 7

Put value of a into (1) 3a + 4b = 41 3 x 7 + 4b = 41 21 + 4b = 41
