How to Use the “Make a Ten” Strategy to Add Dawn Galente, Arlington CSD 2011 This is a self-paced tutorial. Click the mouse each time you want to see the next step. Click to Start

The “Make a Ten” strategy is a helpful way to solve addition problems when one addend is close to a ten. Changing the number to 10 + ? makes it easier. EXAMPLE: 8 + 6 = ? We can move 2 counters from the 6 to the 8. 8 This makes the new problem 10 + 4. The fancy name for this strategy is the associative property of addition… we can change the way we group(associate) numbers in an addition problem as long as we don’t change the original total. 6 10 4 First the 2 and the 4 are grouped together 8 + 6 = 8 + (2 + 4) = (8 + 2) + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14 10 + 4 = 14 Now the 8 and the 2 are grouped together to get our 10

The “Make a Ten” strategy can also be used with larger numbers. EXAMPLE: 29 + 18 = ? We can move 1 counter from the 18 to the 29. This makes the new problem 30 +17. (We could also have moved two counters from the 29 to the 18 to make 27 + 20. Either way works!) 29 + 18 = 30 + 17 = 47 EXAMPLE: 297 + 264 = ? 3 297 264 + 300 + 261 = 561
