Conscription What is it? A system to make people join the armed forces during a war. The conscription issue involved the disagreement by French-speaking Canadians with attempts by the Canadian government to make people join the armed forces during both world wars. “Drafted” Receive a letter from the government telling you to report for duty. Soldiers in World War I were paid approximately $1 per day.

Conscription: Questions Read the person’s profile given to you by your teacher. Put yourself in their position. (“walk a mile in their shoes”) What would your opinion be about conscription?
