What do world youth commonly fear? 73% Canadian youth fears spiders & dark 64% German youth fears war and terrorism 43% Syrian youth fears airstrikes and explosion 47% South Korean youth fears monsters & ghosts 38% New Zeeland youth fears heights and sharks

What is fear? - Common def. An unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm (Oxford dictionary) - A response to a perceived threat that is consciously recognized as a danger (North American Nursing Diagnosis Association) Causative factors: separation from one's support system in a potentially threatening situation such as hospitalization, diagnostic test, or treatment; knowledge deficit or unfamiliarity; language barrier; sensory impairment; and phobic stimulus or phobia. Fear vs. anxiety: having an identifiable stimulus vs. non easily identifiable stimulus.

(physical & emotional)? WHAT IS FEAR? Common symptoms, (physical & emotional)? Sweaty palms Wide eyes Ticks Skin rash Trembling Pulse increase Screaming Perspiration Dry month Rapid breading Immobility

What is fear? Key things to know! It is healthy! part of normal brain function; a lack of fear may be a sign of serious brain damage. It comes in many shades!  from mild to paralyzing…doctor check up/terrorist attack 3) Not as automatic as commonly deemed! partly instinct (pain), partly learned (afraid of certain people, places, or situations because of negative associations and past experiences, partly taught (based on cultural norms/perceptions) Partly imagined (based on what we imagine could happen) 4) It dictates your actions: a. freeze, b. fight, c. flight, or d. fright you read a memo your company will be laying off people tell your boss why you shouldn’t be laid off start looking for another job you take no action (in long run you become depressed)

THE GOOD & THE BAD SIDES OF FEARS To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.  ~Bertrand Russell Fear makes us feel our humanity.  ~Benjamin Disraeli There are times when fear is good.  It must keep its watchful place at the heart's controls.  ~Aeschylus Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.  ~German Proverb

The good (survival related) & the bad (mental blocks) fears Fear itself actually a good thing? Fear doesn’t negate courage. It beckons it! (makes you step out of your comfort zone and learn new things, gives creativity) Fear is intended to keep us safe! Fear is instructive (sign you are changing/growing)! But…OUR REACTION TO IT IS AN ISSUE causing: cardiovascular damage, bowel syndrome, brain damage; fatigue, mental heath issues (depression, PTSD), etc.
