What does it mean to be “credible?”

What does it mean to be “credible?” Trustworthy Relevant Why is it important to use credible sources to back up your claims?

To find trustworthy sources: Must come from an EXPERT, UNBIASED, or WELL-RESPECTED source: -Newspapers (NOT the opinion section) -Academic journals (American Psychologist, International Journal of Biological Sciences, American Journal of Public Health, American Political Science Review) -Experts on the topic (doctors for health topics; teachers, principals, superintendents for education; coaches, athletes and analysts for sports; zoologists, professors, vets for animals; etc) -Books

To find trustworthy sources: -KY Virtual Library (can access on PLD’s library website) -Google scholar (scholar.google.com) -ASK MRS. PERRY IN THE LIBRARY! -New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Forbes **DO NOT JUST DO A GOOGLE SEARCH OR USE WIKIPEDIA**

To find RELEVANT sources: 1) Must be NO OLDER than 10 years. So anything published before 2007 would probably not be relevant today. 2) Must be an expert in the field. If it’s just some dude on Facebook expressing an opinion, then it’s not relevant.

Watch out for these things when you’re researching: No author name, date, and/or citation of sources= probably not credible Websites like wikipedia, ask.com, Facebook, are places where any ‘ol person can edit information. These are not credible in themselves.

W.7: I can use credible sources to back up my claims. Assignment Find your sources online with similar thematic ties to Fahrenheit 451. You MUST have 3-5 sources. Begin compiling your presentation. Look at your checklist for guidelines for what should be complete. SL.2: I can integrate information into a visual media presentation.
