Regional Trainers’ Conference November 2007 From Novice to Expert..

Theme From Novice to Expert. The progression of competency based training. Calibrating the assessment of competence from Novice to Expert.

Tuesday Programme Welcome 3.30 – 4.30 Conference begins – keynote speeches Dr Barry Lewis – GP Director- overview Dr Bob Kirk – Head of Postgraduate GP School Dr Jane Mamelok - RCGP WPBA Lead 4.45 – 6.15 Discussion in locality groups – Associate Directors to lead sessions Trainers groups to consider how to cascade and quality assure the calibration and expertise locally. 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. DINNER Amar Rughani is a full time GP principal working in a large practice on the northern edge of Sheffield. He is married to a part-time GP and lives with his greatest supporters and sternest critics. Since 1997 he has been involved in education and assessment as an examiner for the RCGP, where he has a lead role in developing the nMRCGP. He is an Associate Postgraduate Dean with South Yorkshire and Humber Deanery with responsibility for CPD, assessment and curriculum issues. He has a particular interest in the futile but fascinating exercise of “defining” Generalism, most recently through the new GP curriculum and in common with most educators, is most fulfilled when developing the potential of others.

Wednesday Programme Short plenary Workshops and calibration sessions LUNCH Aim to finish 3.30 – 4.00 p.m. Dr. Mike Deighan is currently the RCGP Curriculum and Trainer support Fellow. He is a full time GP and Associate Director in West Midlands Deanery. He has been the key player developing the GP curriculum and has worked closely with the WPBA team form the London Deanery, Nav Chana and Tim Swanick. He is a MRCGP Examiner and has a long experience of teaching and assessment. We are privileged to have him here today, he is happy to take questions on the curriculum but please remember like me he is a messenger NOT the author of policy. We are also joined by Alison Baker GP Training Curriculum Project Officer. Mike and Alison are observing and information gathering looking at how deaneries are cascading information about the new GP curriculum.
