THE OPPOSITION PARAGRAPH… IT IS TIME TO MATURE!!!

Key Points: An opposing idea will appear in every paragraph. Each opposing idea will show the complexity of your complex argument. The opposing ideas will show your interested, intrigued reader that YOU are a thoughtful, intelligent, brilliant writer who recognizes that there are NO EASY ANSWERS to tough questions. Each paragraph will have at least one opposing idea.

This TRANSITION is good, but it is soooooo last year. The opposition may argue because they believe However, they are wrong because

Hypothetical Paper… Topic: Do schools have the right to search a student’s locker? Thesis: The locker is property of the school, searches are necessary for the safety of everyone, and students do not have many rights at school are reasons why locker searches should take place.

THIS is so 2010: The opposition may argue that locker searches should not be allowed because they believe that the locker belongs to the student during school hours. However, they are wrong because a locker is property of the school. A student’s locker is only on loan while at school. Since the student does not own or pay for the locker, the owner (school) has every right to search the locker.

THIS is 2011: While a school is obligated to respect the property that belongs directly to a student, a locker contained in the school is considered school property. The student neither pays for nor owns the locker, and because the school has, in essence, loaned that student that piece of equipment for the year, the school has the right to search their own property.
