Beginning A Research study by ICC explored the opportunities and challenges of the local church in Cambodia This led to a conclusion that there was a role for ICC to play in supporting local churches, but exactly how was in question At the same time Tearfund was sharing the experience of Umoja with partners A key staff member saw Umoja as the answer to ICCs desire to work with the church Pilot project is born 2012

How it Happened Lessons and Logic - Organisational Ownership - Pilot project involved staff from different teams and projects, no salary, no role (budget of $7000 to start with 3 churches) Choosing the Churches - Criteria and drop out Working with a Denomination - Partnership with New Life Pastors Role - Involved but not necessarily facilitators Geographical limits - Keeping close by Spreading the Risk - Multiple facilitators and migration Training in Stages - Learning by doing and mentors Began to Show Fruit - Monitoring Framework evolved Scaled up to a larger project - Direct church links and strategic Partners Learning Communities - CoP Stage 0 - Cambodian context of church Upstream - Bible schools
