gene mapping & pedigrees
Genes are found in specific locations on chromosomes. The closer genes are to each other, the more likely they are to be inherited together. Linkage maps use crossover frequency rates to estimate where genes are located. How are genes mapped?
Gene map & Pedigree example (Example: copy onto top of pg. 30) Gene A & B cross over 6% of the time Gene B & C cross over 12.5% of the time How far apart are genes A & C?
Some genetic disorders are sex- linked Some genetic disorders are sex- linked. (Carried and inherited on sex chromosomes.) Only females are sex-linked carriers. Genes are on the X chromosome. Males (XY) will show the disorder. A pedigree shows the phenotypes and genotypes of a family. It shows if there is a chance anyone is a carrier for a disorder. What are pedigrees?
Example: glue copy onto bottom of pg. 30
Create your own Pedigree You will create a pedigree that shows at least 3 generations. Each person in your pedigree must have some form of the trait you choose. Show the genotypes! Use a to represent males and a for females. Place yourself in the “F1” generation. You can add a future spouse and future children for yourself. The parental generation is your parents.
