England’s Glorious Revolution How did England become a constitutional monarchy?

I. James II: Absolute Monarch A. James II was a Catholic & believed in “Divine Right” B. James’ II daughters Mary & Anne were Protestant C. James II remarries to have a Catholic son D. James II begins displaying Catholic symbols & promoting Catholics in Govt 1. Parliament protests, James II dismisses Parliament E. Several Members of Parliament approach Mary about overthrowing her father 1. Mary’s husband William of Orange, a Dutch prince, agrees to send his army 2. Instead of fighting, James II flees for France F. 1688: The “bloodless” overthrow of James II is called the Glorious Revolution

II. The Constitutional Monarchy A. 1689: William & Mary are crowned co-rulers of England & Scotland B. Parliament drafts English Bill of Rights: 1) Monarch cannot suspend Parliament + laws 2) Monarch can’t tax without Parliament’s consent 3) Monarch cannot interfere with free speech 4) Parliament’s consent (“okay”) needed for war C.
