Testing Food for Starch Today’s focus: Carbohydrates

Important Nutrients for your Body Proteins material used for growth and repair Fats stores energy Water Carbohydrates provide energy for cells made up of cellulose, helping materials move through digestive system Vitamins Minerals

Carbohydrates (or Carbs) Two types: Simple and Complex Simple glucose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, etc. Complex starch, cellulose

Complex Carbohydrates Molecular chain of simple sugar molecules that are held together by chemical bonds Must be chemically changed/digested which breaks the chain into sugar particles that can be used by the body (starch to sugar)

Testing foods for starch Each group will receive 4 different types of food. First, predict whether or not it contains starch. I will come around and put drops of iodine on each food. Remember- IODINE is a poison, so do not touch it after I drop it on the food. IF the food turns a blue-black color, it contains starch. Record your data on your paper. CLEAN UP: Throw the plate and food in the trash. Answer the remaining questions and be ready for discussion.

Conclusion What foods contained starch? What foods did not contain starch? Think about simple and complex carbohydrates. What are examples of simple carbohydrates? What are examples of complex carbohydrates? Which do you think is better for your body and why?
