Sacred Writing Time: 11/15/17 PART 1: (5-7 minutes) Copy the T-chart below into your journal: My Academic Writing Strengths Needs Improvement Reflect on the academic writing you have done in 7th grade: argument and explanatory responses. What is some of the feedback you have received from teachers, peers, and even yourself? Categorize it into strengths and areas for improvement. GEN

Sacred Writing Time: 11/15/17 PART 2: (5-7 minutes) How might the sandwich pictured below be used as a metaphor for a well-developed paragraph? Be specific! GEN

The Evidence Sandwich: Leave Nothing on the Plate! A satisfying sandwich has two slices of bread that “wrap” around a flavorful meat. In written responses, the same is true for crafting an effective body paragraph. Check out this “recipe” for a well-developed body paragraph: Evidence Sandwich Evidence Sandwich Topic Sentence with Context (Top Slice & Tomato) Evidence Tag and Evidence (Lettuce & Meat) Analysis with Concluding Sentence (More Meat, Some Cheese, & Bottom Slice)

The Evidence Sandwich: Leave Nothing on the Plate! The purpose of an evidence sandwich is to ensure that your reader understands your evidence, why you are choosing it, and how it connects to your topic sentence. Good writers who use the evidence sandwich model “leave nothing on the plate,” i.e., they leave nothing left for their readers to wonder or question. Evidence Sandwich

The Evidence Sandwich: Leave Nothing on the Plate! Check out the Evidence Sandwich resources being distributed. Identify one component of an evidence sandwich that matches a writing strength you listed in your journal today. Identify one component that matches one of the skills you identified for improvement. Share these with your table group. Evidence Sandwich

Hungry to be a better writer? Hungry yet? Hungry to be a better writer? Chew on the Evidence Sandwich!

Evidence Sandwich Sort It’s time to make an evidence sandwich! You have all of the ingredients you’ll need. Sort them so your sandwich is in the correct order. Work together so that your sandwich is well-constructed and won’t fall apart.

Evidence Sandwich Sort Let’s see if you left anything on the plate...compare your sandwich to mine. Ready for another? Here we go!

Evidence Sandwich Sort Let’s check this one. How did you do? Be sure to get a copy of the model sandwiches to keep in your writing section for future reference. Remember, this “recipe” can be used for any academic writing in any class!

YOUR TURN Now it’s your turn to be the chef. Let’s check out the writing prompt and process. Don’t worry, you’ve now graduated from Mrs. Batelka’s Culinary Academy of Evidence Sandwich Making, so you’ll be just fine on your own!
