Outline Goals Outlines of Survey Paper Current Working Status Schedule Architecture Management Issues Schedule Q&A

Project Goal Need to resolve the challenges facing today’s Internet by rethinking the fundamental assumptions and design decisions underlying its current architecture Currently, a major research effort has been initiated on the topic of Clean Slate design of the Internet’s architecture Management issues of Future Internet also need to be considered from the stage of design Thus, we will define management requirements & operations of Future Internet  Writing a survey paper: Towards Management of Future Internet

Paper Outline 1: Introduction 2: Definition of Future Internet 3: Status of current Internet History of Internet development Merits & demerits of current Internet 4: Summary of research effort of Future Internet FIND, GENI, FIRE, JGN2, etc. 5: Challenges & Requirements of Future Internet 6: Architecture of Future Internet 7: Management Issues of Future Internet Management Requirements Management Operations 8. Concluding remarks

Progress Mijung Sungsu Define Future Internet based on our survey of research effort of Future Internet Summarize merits & demerits of current Internet Summarize research activities of Future Internet Summarize & propose an architecture of Future Internet Sungsu Summarize challenges & requirements of Future Internet Study architectural considerations of Future Internet Now, we concentrate on management issues of Future Internet Management requirements, operations

Architecture (1) Keywords Virtualization Virtualizes network resources and provide customer-specific services Service-oriented architecture Defines layer’s functions as services and converge the services to support the network operations Cross-layer design Divides network layers and support cross-layer mechanism

Architecture (2) Cross-layer Control Mechanism (Control Agent) Application C B Application Layer D G A F E Cross-layer Control Mechanism (Control Agent) Overlay Network Error detection Reliable transmission In-order delivery TCP Layer … Segmentation Flow control Layer Functionalities  Service Definition IP + ά Header error detection Encapsulation IP Layer Forwarding QoS-guaranteed Routing … Underlay Network Physical + MAC Layer Photonic NW, Mobile NW, Sensor NW, etc.  Resource Virtualization

Management (1) Research Efforts in USA Two FIND Projects Towards Complexity-Oblivious Network Management Operationally independent, self bootstrapping management A single, simple management interface for all data plane protocols High-level, goal-directed specification of network properties policies Design for Manageability in the Next Generation Internet Automated management Intrinsic management support Real-time change detection Pervasive data sharing Network management evaluation test-bed and methodology

Management (2) Research Efforts in Europe EuroNGI WP.JRA.1.5 Network Management: New trends and Architectures Location management Mobility management Management architecture Special Joint Specific Research Project (JRA.S.06): Design and Evaluation of Distributed, Self-Organized QoS Monitoring for Autonomous Network Operation (AutoMon) Specify a distributed, self-organizing and autonomic IP QoS monitoring framework which is based on Distributed Hash Tables Evaluate the performance of the peer-to-peer mechanisms for maintaining the monitoring overlay European network on MANagement solutions for the Internet and Complex Services (EMANICS) Joint Research: Scalable management, Economic management, Autonomic management

Schedule Mijung Sungsu 12/3~12/9 Summarize research efforts related to management and propose requirements and operations of Future Internet Summarize research efforts related to management and consider possible network management technologies for Future Internet 12/10~12/16 Write the survey paper and proof-read 12/17~ Paper finalize & prepare the final presentation
