Latitude and Longitude Ms. Robinson
Coordinate Systems On a sphere such as the Earth, we can pinpoint the location of any city or landmark using two values, the lines of latitude and longitude.
On the Earth there are two additional sets of reference points. The Equator divides the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. http://nationalatlas.gov/articles/mapping/IMAGES/latlong2.gif
The Prime Meridian divides the Earth into the Western Hemisphere and the Eastern Hemisphere. http://www.arcticice.org/images/long.gif
Latitude Lines of Latitude run horizontally Latitude is measured in degrees. The Equator is 0 degrees Latitude. Lines of Latitude locate places North or South of the Equator.
Longitude Lines of Longitude run vertically. The Prime Meridian is 0 degrees Longitude. Lines of Longitude locate places East or West of the Prime Meridian.
Let’s Review! Which imaginary line divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres?
