The media of the ductus arteriosus (DA) largely consists of smooth muscle cells, instead of circumferentially arranged layers of elastic fibers. The media of the aorta is composed of parallel elastic fibers. The intimal thickness, which can be the ductal intima (intimal cushion), extends beyond the border between the normal aorta and ductal arteriosus at the media.
