Presentation transcript:

Purpose of the workshop: To make clear to parents the progression in skills in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. For the children to demonstrate some of these skills. To enable parents to support their children at home with maths work. To answer any questions about supporting children at home with maths.

REASONING REASONING REASONING How do skills in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing develop? Progression in Maths Calculations document on the school website – have a look later. CONCRETE – use apparatus PICTORAL – draw diagrams to aid calculation ABSTRACT – written calculation. MUST NOT JUMP STRAIGHT TO ABSTRACT – children will not master the concept in order to be able to apply it to solve problems. REASONING REASONING REASONING Explain why? How do you know ? Is there a pattern? What would happen if…?

CONCRETE 12 + 5 = 17 Start with the larger number on the bead string and then count on to the smaller number 1 by 1 to find the answer

PICTORAL 12 + 5 = 17 Start at the larger number on the number line and count on in ones or in one jump to find the answer.

ABSTRACT 5 + 12 = 17 Place the larger number in your head and count on the smaller number to find your answer.

SEE CALCULATION IN ACTION! Children from each year group will use their reasoning skills to explain to you how to solve the activity they have. Feel free to develop their reasoning skills by asking them “Why did you do that?” or “How did you know?” Laptops have the Progression in Maths Calculations document available for you to look at. Teachers will be happy to answer any specific questions you have . Finally… Parent support booklet which outlines clearly everything in the KS2 maths curriculum – available for the subsidised price of £2.50.
