Presentation transcript:

The third full week of October is Kentucky Safe Schools Week! Schools across Kentucky focus on school safety issues in classrooms, in their schools and in their communities.

This year's theme is “BE INCREDIBLE, Reveal Your SUPERhero This year's theme is “BE INCREDIBLE, Reveal Your SUPERhero!” Being incredible is being the best you can possibly be. Every student has incredible super skills and talents that make them unique and strong. We need our students to ban together with school staff and the community to create a “family-like” culture at school. Incredible super powers can be used fighting against bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, conflict, hate and violence while spreading empathy, compassion and respect.  As quoted from the Disney “Incredibles 2” movie “It’s time to make some wrong things right, help us bring Supers back into the sunlight!”

The rest of the Ky Safe Schools Webpage is divided into three major sections, with subsections. First Educators, click on the educators icon and go directly to the educator section, or click on Students and Parents or Community. You get the drill. The Educators section is divided into four subsections see above….

Resources for Educators Under the Educators section there are teacher resources. The first resource has many highlighted resources for the week. Other links are full of resources and lessons for your classrooms and individual students to use. TRTs digital literacy to combat cyberbullying can be found at commonsensemedia.org and so much more.

Hey Counselors and Media Specialists… Book lists and discussion guides are also available for our counselors and media specialist. Does your school want to focus on a framework that is evidence-based to prevent and reduce bullying behavior “Olweus” contacts at KDE are listed above.

Handouts for All Audiences Next section is Handouts and this is self explanatory. KCSS has handouts for all stakeholders, students, teachers, parents and community. Many of our schools will put a sticker on these handouts and place them around the community: on grocery bulletin boards, in the sheriffs office, in doctors waiting rooms… Educating our students and staff is great but the community as a whole needs to come together and work on the issue of bullying prevention and this is one way to get the word out.

Videos and Powerpoints The next section on this page includes powerpoints and videos. There are just a few for you to use if they fit your purpose. The last two videos are short “feel good” moments from Values.com. They show students helping other students when exclusion and bullying is taking place. They are great writing prompts or discussion starters. I’ve touched the tip of the iceberg of all the resources located on this page and it links to other pages like cyberbullying, etc…
