How Jesus Shamed Our Shame! z How Jesus Shamed Our Shame!

✞ Jesus overcame shame through his life, death, and resurrection! z z ✞ Jesus overcame shame through his life, death, and resurrection!

✞ Throughout his Life – Jesus consistently disregards shame! z ✞ Throughout his Life – Jesus consistently disregards shame! Matthew 8:1-3 1 When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.

✞ Throughout his Life – Jesus consistently disregards shame! z Luke 7:44-46 44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.

✞ Through his Death – Jesus willingly submits to the shame of crucifixion! z Psalm 22:5-7 5 To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. Philippians 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!

Galatians 3:1 It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. z

The cross is where Jesus Christ bore the sin and shame of the world! 2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Isaiah 53:4-5 4 Surely he took up our pain [physical sicknesses] and bore our suffering [emotional sorrows/mental anguishes], yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities [spiritual sins]; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed [all three].

During the shame of crucifixion, Jesus doesn’t lose his honor! John 18:6-8 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said. 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” Luke 22:51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. Matthew 26:54, 56 54 “But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?” 56 “But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”

During the shame of crucifixion, Jesus doesn’t lose his honor! John 10:18 “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” John 19:27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. John 19:30 “It is finished!” z During the shame of crucifixion, Jesus doesn’t lose his honor!

During the shame of crucifixion, Jesus shames his enemies! z During the shame of crucifixion, Jesus shames his enemies! Colossians 2:15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

✞ Through his Resurrection, Jesus overturns shame! z Hebrews 12:2 For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 2:9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Revelation 5:12 In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”

Jesus shamed shame so that you can live in God’s glory above shame! z z Jesus shamed shame so that you can live in God’s glory above shame!
