Who are you? YWCA’S GUIDE TO healthy SELF ESTEEM, CONFIDENCE, and acceptance in others

WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM?

Self Esteem The ability to recognize POSITIVE traits in yourself and others Accepting these traits as POSITIVE aspects Confidence in YOURSELF Impacts the way we FEEL and TREAT others Full bucket of water when we are born-negative comments are holes and our self esteem drips out

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE CONFIDENCE?

CONFIDENCE Feeling of self-assurance in your abilities The belief you can accomplish a goal Having trust in yourself and your abilities

HEALTHY Confidence Believing we are enough We have goals, talents, and attributes the world needs Not concerned what others think of you Being calm and not worry about situations Shut down the negative self talk HEALTHY Confidence

UNHEALTHY Confidence Cockiness Arrogance Building self esteem from outward appearance or financial status Disrespectful Blunt to hurt others UNHEALTHY Confidence

What does it mean to fit in?

FITTING IN To be accepted by a group because of similarities Common interests

NOT FITTING IN Realize not everyone has the same interests Your words matter Accepting others for being different Just because you don’t agree doesn’t mean you don’t need to be kind Realizing everyone has different home situations NOT FITTING IN

RAISE SELF ESTEEM When you don’t fit in. Spend time with people you like and who care about you Ignore people who put you down Do things you enjoy Do things you are good at Reward yourself RAISE SELF ESTEEM When you don’t fit in.

RAISE YOUR SELF ESTEEM Develop your talents Be your own best friend Make your own choices Take responsibility for your choices Do what you think is right Respect others Have goals RAISE YOUR SELF ESTEEM

Ways to EMPATHIZE Realize everyone has a different home life Including others even those with different interest May not have finances to buy the cool clothes or school supplies Being kind even when we do not like someone You never know what someone is going through Ways to EMPATHIZE

ISOLATION When someone is withdrawn Sitting alone Does not want to talk in front of class Does not engage with other students

Include Others Ask them to sit by you Say a kind word Smile Ask them to be part of a group Stick up for them

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE BOUNDARIES?

Crossed Boundaries Inappropriate comments Borrow something and never return it Push you into saying “yes” Want you to do something that makes you uncomfortable

Personal space Constantly touching you Will not give you any space Always wants to be near you Making you feel uncomfortable

Inappropriate comments Saying words that you do not agree with Making comments that make you uncomfortable Using words your not allowed to use Saying things you do not want to talk about
