Notes #4: Molarity WCHS Chemistry

RECAP! 2 EQUATIONS FOR FINDING MOLES Be careful! Are we talking about a mass (grams)? Moles = mass FW Are we talking about a gas at STP (liters)? Moles of = volume in Liters gas at STP 22.4

MOLARITY Molarity is the number of moles of a solute per liter of solution. Example: A solution containing 6 moles of HCL per liter of solution would be written “6 M HCL” and would be written “six molar hydrochloric acid solution” Molarity = Concentration!

MOVE DECIMAL 3 times to LEFT! NEW FORMULA! Molarity (M) = moles Volume in L M= Molarity Volume is ALWAYS measured in Liters! To go from mL to L, MOVE DECIMAL 3 times to LEFT!

If you’re given grams, convert to moles What volume of 1.50 M HCL solution contains 10.0 g of hydrogen chloride? Molarity = moles Volume in L If you’re given grams, convert to moles 2. Divide moles by Volume in L
