Volume 120, Issue 4, Pages 984-987 (March 2001) Rapid increase of mucosal CD4 T cells followed by clearance of intestinal cryptosporidiosis in an AIDS patient receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy  Wolfgang Schmidt, Ulrich Wahnschaffe, Marco Schäfer, Thomas Zippel, Mardjan Arvand, Andreas Meyerhans, Ernst–Otto Riecken, Reiner Ullrich  Gastroenterology  Volume 120, Issue 4, Pages 984-987 (March 2001) DOI: 10.1053/gast.2001.22557 Copyright © 2001 American Gastroenterological Association Terms and Conditions

Fig. 1 (A) Clinical course. HAART but not paromomycin led to clinical improvement with resolution of diarrhea, weight gain, and eradication of cryptosporidia from the gastrointestinal tract in a patient with AIDS with cryptosporidiosis. (B) Virologic and immunologic changes. A similar reduction of the viral load was seen in both mucosa and blood, and CD4 T lymphocytes increased in both compartments. However, the increase in CD4 T cells in the mucosa was much greater and more rapid.
