These Innovations are All in Your Head! How do you know how/when to do things? What requisite skills do you call upon? Use your metacognition! You will rely heavily on your own metacognition. How do you know when/how to do things? “I just do” doesn’t cut it! Are there prompts in the environment? Is it something you plan in your head? Do you use a reminder system? How many times did you watch someone else do it?

Coach: Questions & Extensions One-on-one conference 1. “I notice ____” or “it seems like ____” 2. Ask questions to pull out what student knows/understands (and based on previous mini lessons) 3. Suggest and walk away

IMPORTANT Don’t instruct, give directives, or judge during coaching Do involve other adults who see child in the process Be aware: strategies may fade in effectiveness From research and experience… (it must be pulled from students’ guts, so it is internal and not dependent on you as a prompt) EF skills often don’t generalize without adults in other settings being involved and able to speak the language/coach too
