MOTION. ASTRONOMY The study of objects in space, including the moon, stars, and planets. Solar system Composed of the sun and the planets which travel.
Today’s Agenda… Bellringer: Identify each as rotation or revolution (this is not multiple choice) A. Takes 24 hours B. Spins on Axis C. Takes 365 ¼ days.
Earth’s Seasons. Rotation 1.The imaginary line that passes through Earth’s center and the North and South poles is called Earth’s axis. 2.Earth spinning.

Rotation – spinning on its axis Earth rotates at 1670km/hr(1070mph) at the Equator.

Angle of inclination-The Earth is tilted at 23.5°

Changes in the angle that sunlight strikes the Earth’s surface cause the seasons.

When tilted away from the sun, the rays are at a low angle = low intensity=cooler.

When tilted towards the sun, the rays are at a high angle = high intensity=hotter.

Revolution – a body in space traveling around another. Earth revolves at 108,000km/hr(66,660mph)

Equinox – the moment the sun crosses the equator. 2 per year: spring = vernal, fall=autumnal

Solstice – the sun is as far North or South as it will go. 2 per year: summer(longest day of the year), winter(shortest day of the year)

Pass out Sun, Earth & Moon hand out

Draw on your paper Sun, Earth, Moon Diagram Drawing Follow the directions on the back of your paper. As you see the items on the slides, draw them on your paper.

Draw the 3 other Earth’s positions

Spring(Vernal) equinox Summer solstice Winter solstice Fall (autumnal) equinox

Diameters (write in red)

Sun - 1.4 million km

Earth’s Rotation 1 day=24 Hours

Earth’s Revolution When is the Earth closest to the sun? 365.25 days When is the Earth closest to the sun? (Write in distances from the sun) Earth’s Revolution

Moon’s Rotation 28 Days! Moon’s Revolution= They are the same! Lunar Revolution
