Cell Cycle and Nuclear Divsion Mitosis

Structures and Sequences During Mitosis a number of changes take place These changes follow a logical sequence of events that allow the division of DNA into two equal, genetically identical portions There are a number of cell structures that bear watching

Important structural components The DNA must replicate itself The chromosomes must condense and re-extend The nuclear envelope must disintegrate and reform The centriole must divide and migrate (in animal cells, plants lack centrioles) The spindle must form and disintegrate The cytoplasm must divide

Chromosomes must: Replicate Condense Attach to the spindle S phase of interphase Condense Prophase Attach to the spindle Prometaphase Align in the middle of the spindle Metaphase Divide and migrate to opposite poles Anaphase Extend Telophase

Duration and Frequency

Duration and Frequency Phases that appear frequently must take up a relatively large part of the time in the cell cycle Phases that are relatively short won’t appear as often

Duration and Frequency Most of the cells in this view are similar to the cells outlined. This phase must be the longest phase

Duration and Frequency Very few of the cells in this view look like the highlighted cell. That phase must be relatively short

Compare the appearance of the cells that you see in this view. Consider which of them look alike What about them is similar? What about them is different? Which type appears most frequently?

Interphase

Interphase Consider the condition of the: Chromatin / Chromosomes Nucleolus Nuclear envelope Mitotic Spindle

Prophase Consider the condition of the: Chromatin / Chromosomes Nucleolus Nuclear envelope Mitotic Spindle

Metaphase Consider the condition of the: Chromatin / Chromosomes Nucleolus Nuclear envelope Mitotic Spindle

Anaphase Consider the condition of the: Chromatin / Chromosomes Nucleolus Nuclear envelope Mitotic Spindle

Telophase Consider the condition of the: Chromatin / Chromosomes Nucleolus Nuclear envelope Mitotic Spindle Note what is happening to the cytoplasm How is it different in the two cells shown?
