Secrets of the Soul PRACTICING A CONSISTENT CHRISTIAN WALK: A Study in the book of James “INSULTS, SLANDER AND PRIDE” James 4:11-17

‘Secrets of the Soul’ James 4:11-17 (ESV) 11  Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12  There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

‘Secrets of the Soul’ 13  Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14  yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15  Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16  As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17  So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

‘Secrets of the Soul’ I. Prohibition Against SLANDER. {Defaming Another} (vs.11) Def: ‘To make false charges or misrepresentations against a person’s character or reputation.’ [Purposing to damage a person]

‘Secrets of the Soul’ II. Prohibition on INSULTS: “to speak against His brother” Matthew 7:1-5 Speck and beam lesson.

‘Secrets of the Soul’ III. Prohibition on CRITICISM: “Judges His brother” (vs.12) “judges” – to insult in a condescending way; A. God is the AUTHOR of the Law: B. God is the JUDGE of the Law: C. God is the SAVIOR from the Law:

‘Secrets of the Soul’ IV. Prohibition against PRIDE: “your arrogance” (vs.13-17) Planning without God: (vs.13) Failing to Recognize uncertainties: (vs.14) Life’s Disclaimer: (vs.15) Overwhelmed with Arrogance: (vs.16)

Conclusion: ‘Secrets of the Soul’ The Whole Chapter in Review: The Spirit is jealously pursuing you. God gives grace to the Humble. Speak to others in an edifying manner. Everything “if the Lord wills”
