Civilization began in China along the Huang He River and later spread to Chiang Jiang River. Like rivers in Mesopotamia and Egypt, China’s rivers overflowed their banks and brought fresh fertile topsoil to the land. Because of this China’s first farming villages began along its rivers. The Huang He would flood and deposit fertile soil onto the North China Plain. A plain is a flat area of land. Even though the people of China used the fertile soil to grow crops, they called the Huang He the ‘China’s Sorrow. It was called China’s sorrow because the river was unpredictable and would frequently flood. Sometimes this flooding would kill thousands of people.

Questions about the reading Where did the civilization of China begin? How are the rivers of China similar to Mesopotamia? What is the difference between a plain and a mountain? Why did they call China the “river of sorrow”?
