Sporting Superstars Year 6 Summer Term (2015-2016) Mrs Thorpe Creativity and Love of Learning The first part of this term is focused on the SATS tests in May and whilst they are a hugely important focus next term pupils will really benefit from taking part in a number of fun topic based projects, including building a remote controlled car and building and making their own kites to fly!! I look forward to seeing another amazing group of school projects. Global Citizens In this ever changing society, and at a time of real world flux, it is even more important to ensure that our pupils have an understanding of their responsibilities to their fellow human beings. We will look at the plight of citizens from around the world who are less fortunate and more vulnerable than ourselves. The whole child – Spiritual, Moral and Personal As the pupils are now in Year 6, they have embraced their roles setting high standards for the rest of the school. All the pupils are taking their responsibilities seriously. They are continuing to work hard on the PSHCE curriculum and they now really understand that with rights comes responsibilities. Skills for Life In Year 6 we will be focusing on the essential skills for life. We will focus on writing, grammar and mathematics, which will all be tested weekly. There will regular assessments of their writing and all pupils will be encouraged to do their best and to become successful learners.

Communication, Language & Literacy Pupils are going to research and write biographies about various different sporting men and women. Pupils will work on writing balanced arguments, they will debate controversial proposals then write an argument for and against. Through pupils’ writing they will explore how the choices they make affects the meaning of their writing. We are continuing to focus on a variety of different grammatical constructs which can be used to improve and enhance their writing. Pupils will complete written tasks in science and RE as well as topic based work. Pupils will also complete a differentiated weekly reading comprehension task. Religious Education During this term, as always, RE will shape many of the things we do each day, with Christ being at the centre of our school. Using the Diocesan resource, Come and See, we will study: WITNESSES - The Holy Spirit enables people to become witnesses; HEALING - Sacrament of the Sick and COMMON GOOD - Work of the worldwide Christian family. Pupils will also spend a fortnight learning about another world religion – Islam. Mathematics This term pupils learning will include the following: Number, Place Value and sequencing All 4 operations + - x ÷ using both written and mental methodologies including weekly challenges Reasoning / explanations / Justifications and interpretation of how to carry out a mathematical calculation Fractions including decimals & percentages Solving multiple step word problems using a wide variety of different units of measurement Mental calculations including speed tests, times tables and calculations without calculators Geometry: position, direction and motion Data handling - interpreting of different types of pictorial representations of data Shape and space including angles, symmetry and nets Algebra and numeric equations Scientific Understanding Pupils will continue to use their topic work to support their scientific learning on electricity and light. They will also look at the properties of materials including reversible and irreversible change. We will work on a number of practical activities illustrating the importance of fair testing techniques and critical thinking skills. D & T, Art & Music Pupils will be participating in a creative arts afternoon every Wednesday involving musical composition and working on improving their artistic skills. Pupils will take part in a choir session every Thursday morning. After half term pupils will build a remote controlled car and take part in a kite flying project. French Our pupils are fortunate to be taught by a language specialist who comes in every week to work with all KS2 pupils. Physical Education This term PE will normally be on a Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Pupils will be outside as much as possible as the focus this term is athletics, invasion games and outdoor and adventurous activities. Using ICT & I-pads Pupils will work on improving their programming skills using Scratch. They will also use the i-pads for various topic based research. PSHCE, Thinking & Social Skills We are continuing with the regular brain teasers and puzzles to help develop problem solving, resilience and determination. Weekly homework Every pupil needs to complete a weekly reading task, read a minimum of 3 times, revise times tables, complete the weekly homework task and a hand in a termly topic based project. Their projects have been fantastic and I really love having them all arrive in school to celebrate with them.
