Objectives Define terms for central nervous system.   Define terms for central nervous system. Identify the functions. Label the central nervous system.

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010 Vocabulary Central Nervous System- is made up of the brain and spinal cord. Control center of the body. All information is brought to it. Peripheral Nervous System- nerves go from your spiral cord to your arms, hands, legs, and feet. Divides into two parts: somatic and autonomic systems. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010 Vocabulary Con’t Autonomic Nervous- divides into three parts: sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous. Controls your involuntary action. Somatic Nervous- controls your voluntary action. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

Central Nervous System Control center of the body All information is brought to it http://www.saifeehospital.com/images/Others/Nervous%20system_Neurology.jpg PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010 Example You are reaching under your desk and your fingers touch a pencil. The stimulus of touching the pencil triggers nerve impulses in sensory neurons of your fingers. The nerve impulses travel up your brain, telling you there is a pencil. Nerve impulses are sent back down to your fingers, which tells them to grab the pencil. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

Peripheral Nervous System Consists of only nerves Total of 43 pairs of nerves make up system http://www.yuhaschiro.com/nervous-system.shtml PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

Autonomic Nervous System Controls smooth muscles Controls your involuntary actions Example- Breathing http://home.comcast.net/~wnor/thoraxautonomicner.jpg http://gdhfitness.com/images/lungs.gif PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

Somatic Nervous System Controls your voluntary actions Fight – or – flight. Example: Tying your shoes. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010
