Mysterious Lab Report Whenever a scientist performs an experiment, they write a lab report. In this class we are scientists, so whenever we do a lab, we will also need to write a lab report!
Why should we write a Lab Report? To follow the correct scientific method To organize our information To show other scientists what we learned So other scientists can replicate (copy) our experiment
Title Give your Lab Report and experiment a title Short, descriptive of the experiment
1st Section: PURPOSE (State the Question) What is the purpose of your experiment? What QUESTION are you trying to answer with your experiment?
2nd Section: Background Information In this section, you do your required scientific research BEFORE you experiment. (Collect Information). Excellent scientists thoroughly research their topic before experimenting. What kinds of research could we do for this experiment?
3rd Section: Hypothesis Form an educated result to your experiment based on your scientific research on the topic. STATEMENT THE “ANSWER” to your question
4th Section: Materials and Procedures (Test the Hypothesis) For your experiment. List the materials you will need, and then the EXACT procedures you will follow to perform the experiment. Another scientist should be able to replicate your experiment exactly! Include measurements (mL, grams, etc.) WHAT WILL MAKE THIS A “GOOD” (ACCURATE) EXPERIMENT? Now you are ready to perform the experiment!
5th Section: Record and Study Data You will make a DATA TABLE for this section Data tables keep your evidence organized Liquid Time it took for color to dissolve (mins) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Water Vinegar
5th Section: Anaylze Data In this section you will also make a graph of the information from your table and then write a conclusion from your experiment based on your graph.
6th Section: Draw a Conclusion After completing your graph or chart, you will then write a short paragraph describing your experiment in conclusion. What did you learn from this experience? Was your hypothesis proven? What could you do for further research or future experiments?
