Scope of Practice for Fitness Professionals Angie Scheetz, RD

Regulation of Dietetics Professionals Title of R.D. Granted by the Commission on Dietetic Registration Must obtain a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics Complete 900 hours of supervised practical experience Submit a portfolio every 5 years to maintain credentials

Dietitian vs. Nutritionist Registered Dietitians have gone through an accredited undergraduate program, completed an internship, and passed a board exam. Nutritionists may or may not have the same background as a dietitian. Anyone can claim to be a nutritionist without proving background, degrees or certifications.

ACSM Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) vs. RD competencies ACSM Health Fitness Specialist Registered Dietitian Knowing the role of carbs, fats, & protein as fuels for aerobic & anaerobic metabolism Defines obesity, overweight, percent fat, lean body mass, anorexia, bulimia, & body fat distribution Knowledge of Choose My Plate Knowing the importance of calcium & iron in women’s health Knowing the number of calories equivalent to losing 1 # of body fat Interpret lab parameters relating to nutrition Screen individuals for nutritional risk Determine nutrient requirements across life span Calculate &/or define diets for health conditions Supervise nutrition assessment of individual clients with complex medical conditions (Excerpted from ACSM Health & Fitness Summit 2006, “Crossing the Line: Understanding the Scope of Practice between Registered Dietitians and Health/Fitness Professionals,” C.
