John Winthrop was the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony Massachusetts Colony John Winthrop was the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritans followed strict rules: only travel on Sunday to church, people dressed in fancy clothes paid a fine, dancing and games such as horseshoes were forbidden. Puritans did not have the same respect for Native Americans as Pilgrims and took their land when they wanted. King Phillip’s War (1675-1676) damaged or destroyed half of the 90 towns killing 600 settlers and 3000 Native Americans.
