Properties of Shape

2D shapes 2D stands for 2 dimensional. There are lots of 2D shapes. They all have a height and a width but no thickness. Can you name these 2D shapes?

Square

Triangle

Rectangle

Circle

2D shape… Another word for a shape is a POLYGON. There are lots of different kinds of POLYGON. We can look at a shape’s properties and sort them: Number of sides, number of corners equal sides

Regular polygons: Regular polygons all have equal sides. They have the same sized angles.

Irregular polygons: Irregular polygons have sides of different sizes. They have angles of different sizes.

Equal sides…

Guess the shape… I have six sides. My sides are all the same and my angles are all the same. What am I? I am a regular hexagon!

Guess the shape… I have five sides. My sides are different sizes and my angles are different sizes. I am an irregular pentagon!

Guess the shape… I have four sides and four corners. I have 2 long sides and 2 shorter sides. I am a rectangle!

Guess the shape… I have 8 sides and 8 corners. My sides are all the same size. I am an octagon!

Guess the shape… I have 8 sides and 8 corners. My sides are not all the same size. I am an irregular octagon!

LC: DO I know properties of regular/irregular polygons? You have a selection of shapes and descriptions. These are all mixed up. Match the shape to its description then stick in your book. Extension: If you finish, get some strips of scrap paper and write your own descriptions of shapes on the pieces of paper. Put these in the box at the front. These will be used for our game at the end of the lesson to test your knowledge of shapes and their properties!
