basic structural and functional units of all organisms Cells basic structural and functional units of all organisms

Cell Theory The cell is basic unit of life. All living things are made up of one or more cell. All cells come from other living cells.

Cell MEMBRANE (Plasma Membrane) CELL GUTS.... Cell MEMBRANE (Plasma Membrane) - surround the outer limits of the cell (out of bounds) - varies in thickness RBC very flexible Epithelial cell very rigid - usually has holes - FLUID MOSAIC MODEL 1.) there are two layers of MOLECULES BILAYER of phospholipids Each has a HYDROPHOBIC and HYDROPHILIC end 2.) proteins are stuck inside the membrane cross the bilayer and make the holes that let ions and molecules in and out of the cell

Outside Inside phospholipids protein

chromatin ( DNA, RNA, other protiens) NUCLEUS - THE BRAIN!!!! theshiznit.co.uk - DNA deoxyribonucleic acid chromatin ( DNA, RNA, other protiens) Nucleolus dark area inside the nucleus, almost like a tiny nucleus inside the nucleus - often surrounded by nuclear membrane or envelope

breaks down drugs and other substances Organelles Ribosomes - protein builders of the cell Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) membrane covered organelle produces lipids breaks down drugs and other substances packages proteins for delivery out of the cell

- ENERGY SOURCE breaks down food...releases energy Mitochondria - ENERGY SOURCE breaks down food...releases energy ATP – adenosine triphosphate Golgi Apparatus - takes simple molecules and combines them and pieces them together to make larger molecules

Lysosomes Vacuoles Cytoplasm - contain chemicals that digest wastes and old cell parts… Vacuoles - storage areas in the cell (bubbles of goodies) Cytoplasm - gel-like material inside the cell

Cell Parts for Locomotion Cilia Short hair-like projections Flagella Long whip-like tail

Pseudopods temporary foot like extension of a one-celled organism protist.i.hosei.ac.jp

Cell Wall More Cell Guts... - found mostly in plant cells - almost entirely made up of cellulose - maintain plant shape

Chloroplast Traps sun energy and Makes food

Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic simple complex nucloid (single DNA strand) chromosomes cell wall may or may not have cell wall no nuclear membrane DEFINITELY nuclear membrane
