UMI Problem Solving July 11, 2017

What is a problem? “A problem arises when you are seeking a goal and the immediate course of action is not apparent.” Marilyn Burns Problem solving and word problems are two different ideas.

How do you teach children to do problem solving or constructive response problems? First we will teach the process 1 in whole groups, 2 then let them work in small groups and 3 then, let them work individually on constructive response items or Exemplars. 4

When you give them a problem, what do you typically do? What are the important “requirements?”

Additional ideas from Marilyn Burns Why? Gives students more power and independence. Gives teachers more formative assessment Gives teachers the ability to facilitate and question

What are the three stages of teaching problem solving? The Introduction 1 What are the three stages of teaching problem solving?

The Exploration 1 2 3 4 5 6 Check their work Your Job Facilitate Students work in whole groups or small groups 2 They discuss how they will solve the problem (Select a strategy) 3 They will use manipula-tives if applicable 4 They will show their work on paper (show numerical work, show drawings, show their answer) 5 Check their work 6 Your Job Facilitate QUES-TION THE STUDENTS

01 02 The Summary Marilyn says have every group share. I say, only have the groups who have worked the problem in different ways share. 02

Where can I get problem solving and constructive response questions?

Where do I get these problems to work? Exemplars!
