Chapter 6 Problem-Solving Mrs. Fisher’s Pre-Algebra

The owner of a book store buys 120 copies of the newest bestseller for $8 each. She marks up the price of the book by 60%. The store sells 65 books at full price. The owner then discounts the book by 15% off the original selling price. The store sells another 25 books at this price. Problem A) What profit has the store made so far on the sale of the books? (Remember, she had to originally buy all the books for $8 a piece).

Find the markup and discount price Answer: $144 See Example: 120(8) = 960-cost of books Find the markup and discount price 60% markup on $8 = $12.80 15% discount on $12.80 = $10.88 Solve: 65(12.80) + 25 (10.88) 832+272 = 1104 1104-960= $144

The owner of a book store buys 120 copies of the newest bestseller for $8 each. She marks up the price of the book by 60%. The store sells 45 books at full price. The owner then discounts the book by 15% off the original selling price. The store sells another 25 books at this price. Problem B) If sales tax is 6.5%, how much money has the store owner collected in sales tax?

1104(0.065)= 71.76 Total sales x percent of tax written as a decimal. Answer: $71.76 1104(0.065)= 71.76 Total sales x percent of tax written as a decimal.
