Morning Worship Thursday 15th November 2018 St Martin of Tours Bishop Justus Church of England School

Let the light of Christ shine in our lives Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives

Receive If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbour. You should rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be. Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so, for on this account the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, "Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbour in your land." From the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 15, verses 7-8, 10-11

Engage St Martin of Tours, 316 or 336 to 397AD. While Martin was a soldier in the Roman army and stationed in Gaul (modern-day France), he experienced a vision, which became the most-repeated story about his life. One day as he was approaching the gates of the city of Amiens, he met a scantily clad beggar. He impulsively cut his military cloak in half to share with the man. That night, Martin dreamed of Jesus wearing the half-cloak he had given away. The priest who cared for the cloak in its reliquary was called a cappellanu, and ultimately all priests who served the military were called cappellani. The French translation is chapelains, from which the English word chaplain is derived.

Engage Some discussion ideas … The British armed forces still have Chaplains that serve alongside soldiers in war zones – what use do you think they may have in that situation? How can we learn not to be tight-fisted or hard hearted (see the Bible reading) towards those who are poor or in need? Video suggestion … UK Army Chaplains - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6bI0OI7EsM Army Chaplain on patrol in Afghanistan (2011) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RioNBmDyKMg

Respond Amen O God, who called Martin from the armies of this world to be a faithful soldier of Christ: give us grace to follow him in his love and compassion for the needy, and enable your Church to claim for all people their inheritance as children of God. Amen

Go out into the world with the light of Christ Let us bless the Lord Thanks be to God Go out into the world with the light of Christ
