Globalisation Vs Nationalism In The E.U. IB HL

Globalisation or Anti-Globalisation? The E.U. has 27 countries. More are wishing to join. Member nations have given up some of their sovereignty and political power to a multinational government. The E.U. over the years have achieved political, social, and cultural integration.

After WWII The E.U. began after the 2nd World War. This was an attempt to try to prevent another World War happening in the future. Turkey is included in order to reduce the risk of war between Islam and the West.

Since Then… In 1986, the Single European Act introduced a rule of majority decisions, increasing the powers of the Council of Ministers and the Parliament. The Maastricht Treaty confirmed the agenda of the “Euro” in 1991. By 1992, all barriers to trade were gone. In 2002, the Euro was introduced to 12 of the 15 members. By 2004, the E.U. was expanded to 25 members.

Issues The UK and Denmark opted out of the single currency. In the 1980s France and Germany were pro-integration. There have been movements within the UK within Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Activities Using Geography Course Companion P384-385, answer the following… What is the European Union and what is its purpose? How has the size of the European Union changed over time? What are the benefits and problems of the European Union? Is the European Union an example of globalisation or regionalism?
