Organic Chemistry: Green Insulation

Introduction Environmental consciousness and energy efficiency are very important issue facing us today. Insulation means prevention of heat loss. It involves surrounding a place or material to prevent or reduce the passage of heat.

Implications The relationship between environmental consciousness and energy efficiency is that heat loss as a result of poor insulation or broken boilers are released into the environment. The heat absorbed by the environment increases the temperature.

Implications The temperature increase leads to the following: Global warming Melting of polar ice caps Flooding Destruction of natural habitats for humans and animals

Implications Loss of heat due to poor insulation or bad boilers cost us financially because we pay more to heat or cool our homes every year. This financial burden affects everyday living as people are forced to cut expenses elsewhere to pay for heating

Alternatives As a result of these implications, better methods of heating have been evaluated. This evaluation is based on a three point scale: Health Recyclability Cost

Alternatives Materials used for insulation are rated based on the three point scale. Many materials are known to have insulation properties, but three have been selected for these research: Fiberglass Sheep wool Blue jeans

Comparison Fiberglass is the traditional modern day form of insulation. As per cost, it is cheap. Recyclability: it is very hard to recycle; also hard to dispose because it doesnt degrade easily in the environment. Health: They are tiny strands of glasses which cause breathing problems.

Comparison Sheep wool have been used for insulation for many centuries. Health: They are safe to handle with no health problems Recyclability: Easy to recycle Cost: Very expensive because sheep farm for wool are hard to find.

Comparison Blue Jean is almost entirely cotton. Health: Very safe for humans and the environment. Recyclability: easy to recycle, and degrades easily in the environment Cost: It is very cheap, because it can be recycled easily.

Blue Jeans Insulation Safe

Blue Jeans Insulation Easy to work with:

Green Product All green products are safe for the environment. They are also safe for all for of lives. They are easy to recycle, making them easy to find, which also means they will be cheap.
