My neighbors gutted their kitchen in order to remodel it. Gutted means that the outside or the shell is left.

A quartz is a hard, glassy rock that is useful for starting a fire.

The backpackers used a piece of flint to start their campfire.

A flint is a very hard stone that makes a spark when struck against steel and is used to start fires. Flint is a type of quartz and was used in early rifles to make a spark that exploded the gunpowder and fired the rifle.
